Where do you live? City and State please, in the country, suburb, etc.
On a 160 acre farm outside Colmesneil, Tx (15 min. north of Woodville)
Your occupation or if you are retired, what was your occupation?
If you are retired, what are you doing now?
I own the Provine Studios franchise for Southeast, East, and part of
Central Texas, and Southwest La. They're the company that took our
mugshots throughout our school years. I've essentially been retired
about five years and am selling the business to some of my employees.
Your hobbies and / or pastimes.
I play at farming and have a '29 Ford Roadster I like to drive. I still
play a little jazz.
How many children do you have and if you have children and grand
children, where do they live?
We weren't so lucky in that dept.
Did you hold an office while in high school, participate in sports,
the band, the Hussars, etc.?
Ronnie Stanley and I (as the maroon party candidates for Pres/VP were
whipped badly by Jeff Hayes and Nancy Creswell. Fortunately, we survived.
What were your aspirations when you were in high school?
Dentistry.
Did you accomplish most of the goals you set for yourself back then or
did you alter your direction?
Yes, but not the way I planned. Before my photography business, I became
a high school principal, regained my sanity in '76 and started several
businesses. Along the way I taught at Lamar University, owned a marine,
motorcycle, and sporting goods business, managed a wholesale oil/fuel
distributorship, and played jazz, which I still do.
What was your favorite song(s) during your high school days? No more
than 5 please. You may want to make one of them your courting song. :-)
Take The A Train, All The Things You Are
What was your favorite movie back then? movie theatre?
Rebel Without A Cause. (Vicariously, obviously) The Village Theater
What were your favorite hangouts or past times.
Taking the Drag, dating Linda (Laughman, '59). (In fact, if I'm lucky,
I'll get another date with her tonight)
Do you have photos of any of events from our high school days, anything
of interest?
Most of what I have were published in the yearbook.
What was your favorite subject in high school and why? Did it help
shape your future?
Band. Music initially got me into education which eventually led to the
school photography business......but more importantly it (jazz) provided
me a life-long avocation.
Who was your favorite teacher or was there a teacher who inspired you?
I fought tooth and toenail, hating every minute of band with Mr. Badgett...
and he turned out to be the most influential and inspiring teacher of my
school days.
Trivia: John Badgett was a fine young jazz player in the 40's...before his
wife tamed him and settled him down.
What was your most embarrassing moment or your worst nightmare during
high school years?
I was kicked out of band nine times in three years....embarassed at first,
but later, kind'a proud.
Where did you meet your mate if you are married?
TJ, at a dance in late '57. Linda is still here despite me. Our fortieth
will be this fall. (note: Jim filled this out in 2002)
If you could change history, what would you do differently if anything
at all?
I'm a happy camper.
If you could go anywhere in the world and be any thing you wanted to
be at this stage of the game, where would you go and what would you do
and why?
Colmesneil, Tx......see above.
If you could go back to our high school days, which year would you
go back to and why? Considering our high school days were 1954 – 1958
including Woodrow Wilson Jr. High years.
'57-58. I met Linda. (I know.....it's mushy I'm anxious to read of
some of my classmates and what they're doing. I spent a lot of time in
education and I'd like to say.....we received a GREAT education in
Port Arthur, Texas in the '50's. We were luckier than any of us could
imagine.
